University Health - University Hospital at the Medical Center

The Broaddus Companies led the planning and project management teams for the University Hospital at the Medical Center located in San Antonio, TX. This project was University Hospital’s first major expansion since 1981, and expanded the existing University Health (UH) campus in the South Texas Medical Center to a two million SF, 713-bed facility. The new hospital tower includes an expanded 66-bay, Level-1 Trauma Center, a two-level 34-operating room surgical suite, new materials management and sterile processing areas, faculty offices, follow-up clinics and a 3-story atrium lobby, all constructed beneath 504 private inpatient rooms (including 112 intensive care beds). The project also included a 10-story 3,330-car parking structure and heliport, and significant site and infrastructure development.

The $853M project represented a comprehensive deployment of services for the Broaddus Companies. At the onset, Broaddus Planning developed the master plan for UH capital improvement projects at both the Downtown and South Texas Medical Center campuses for the healthcare system. Broaddus & Associates was engaged as a part of a joint venture to provide project management services through occupancy on the hospital. As a part of these services, our construction technology team utilized Building Information Modeling and other initiatives to ensure operational efficiencies after project completion.

The University Hospital expansion, along with the expansion of its sister facility in downtown San Antonio, make up the largest capital improvements project in the history of Bexar County (larger than the Alamodome, Convention Center, and AT&T Center combined). Upon completion, the project was awarded LEED Gold certification in recognition of the sustainability measures deployed on the project. The facility received the 2014 “Best Healthcare Project” award from Engineering News Record Texas & Louisiana.
